IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine - Paper Submission Guidelines and Information for Authors
Scope
The IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine (CIM) is a quarterly journal that publishes high-quality papers concerned with the novel discoveries, important insights, or tutorial surveys
in all areas of computational intelligence design and applications, in keeping with the Field of Interest of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (IEEE/CIS).
Additionally, CIM will serve as a media of communications between the governing body and its membership of IEEE/CIS. Authors are encouraged to submit papers on applications oriented
developments, successful industrial implementations, design tools, technology reviews, computational intelligence education, and applied research.
Contributions should contain novel and previously unpublished material. The novelty will usually lie in original concepts, results, techniques, observations, hardware/software
implementations, or applications, but may also provide syntheses or new insights into previously reported research. Surveys and expository submissions are also welcome. In general, material
which has been previously copyrighted, published or accepted for publication will not be considered for publication; however, prior preliminary or abbreviated publication of the material
shall not preclude publication in this journal.
Types of Contributions
Two types of contributions are considered:
- Regular Papers (Papers). A Paper presents significant research, development, or application of broad computational intelligence concepts.
Papers should present a well-rounded treatment of a problem, which places the presented solution in the context of related research work. The maximum length for Papers is typically 25
double-spaced typed pages, including figures and references. Submitted manuscript must be typewritten in English in single-column format. Authors of Papers should specify on the first page
of their submitted manuscript up to 5 keywords.
- Correspondence (Letters). A Letter is intended to serve as a vehicle for rapid publication of less discursive material. It may include brief
research results, comments or correction of published results, and rebuttals in connection with previous publications. The maximum length for Letters is 8 double-spaced typed pages,
including figures. Letters go through a shorter, one time (typically) review process.
Process for Submission of Manuscript
The IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine requires all prospective authors to submit their manuscripts in electronic format, as a PDF file. The created PDF file must be a single file
for the complete submitted Paper or Letter, including figures and bibliography. Before the manuscript is submitted, prospective authors should make sure that the PDF file is (1) printable,
and (2) its first page contains the title, authors' names and the corresponding author's email address, abstract, and up to 5 keywords. For both Paper and Letter submissions, send all the
materials via email to Editor-in-Chief at the email address: eletankc .a_t. nus.edu.sg.
Note that copyright forms, biographical sketches, and authors' photos should be excluded from initial submissions and not transmitted until the paper is accepted. Authors are also
requested to avoid parallel email submissions of manuscripts to the CIM Editorial Office, as well as multiple submissions of the same paper via online form. Also, to avoid duplication and
unnecessary delays, no hard copies of Papers should be mailed to the Editor-in-Chief.
Receipt Acknowledgement
Soon after electronic submission, you will receive an e-mail message acknowledging successful reception of your PDF file and assigning a Reference Number to your manuscript submission.
If there was any problem in the reception and printing of your file, you will be notified.
Manuscript Format
In general, the IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine follows the standards of the IEEE. The details are contained in the booklet, Information for IEEE Transactions, Journals and
Letters Authors, available upon request by mail from IEEE Periodicals, 445 Hoes Lane, Piscataway, NJ 08855, USA, or via email at trans@ieee.org, or by fax at (+1 732) 562 0545. See also this webpage for
details.
Some important hints for manuscript style include:
Manuscript Style: The manuscript should be typewritten using double spacing, one side of sheet only. All pages should be numbered consecutively, including illustration
pages, with no omitted page numbers.
References and Captions: References should be put on a separate page and provided in IEEE style. Figure captions should also be on a separate page from references and
content.
Submission for Final Printing - Manuscript and Electronic Files: For the final production of the manuscript, the author will need to provide an electronic version in
addition to two hard copies of the peer approved version. The author should make certain that changes made to the paper version are incorporated into the electronic version. Care should
also be exercised that electronic submission is complete and includes abstract, text, references, footnotes, biographies, and figure captions. Email submissions are preferred and especially
encouraged when an IEEE LaTeX style is used (see below). In case of submission of electronic files via mail, note the operating system (DOS, MAC, Unix, etc.) and the software used on the
label of the CD-ROM, zip disc, or 3 1/2" disk.
Illustrations and Photos: Figures and photos should be original proofs and not photocopies. Figures should be identified with the figure number and author's name at the
bottom or on the back. Information should be kept on the margin and off the body of the figure. Photos must be prints with no screens. Laser prints are not acceptable in place of photos or where gray scale
graphics are involved. All line drawings and photos should be in black and white, unless specifically requested. Letters should be large enough to be readily legible when the drawing is
reduced to two or one-column widths - as much as 4:1 reduction from the original. All material should be no larger than 22x28 cm (8 1/2 x 11 in). Note that any illustrations that are to be
printed in color will be at the expense of the author (each figure costs $125 on the average, plus $1,045 for the printing cost of 4-page unit).
Preferred E-file Formats: IEEE can process most commercial software programs, but not page layout programs. PostScript files should not be submitted. The preferred
programs are TeX, LaTeX, Microsoft Word and WordPerfect (using only standard macros). An IEEE LaTeX style file can be obtained by email at help@ieee.org
or downloaded from the IEEE Tools For Authors page. More complete instructions for
electronic file submissions are available in the Guidelines for IEEE Author Supplied Electronic Text and Graphics, which can be requested via email at
help@ieee.org or by fax at (+1 732) 562 0545.
Mandatory Page Charges
A mandatory page charge is imposed on all papers exceeding twelve pages (about 25 double-spaced, typed pges) in length, including illustrations. The charge is $125 per page for each page
over the first twelve and is a prerequisite for publication. Details are provided at the time of acceptance; authors are, however, urged to keep this in mind when submitting and revising
their papers.
Page Charges
After a manuscript has been accepted for publication, the author's company or institution will be encouraged to pay $110 per printed page to cover part of the cost of publication. The
page charges are not obligatory, nor is their payment a prerequisite for publication. The author will receive 100 free reprints without coverif the page charge is honored. Detailed
guidelines on page charges will accompany the galley proofs.
Copyright
It is the policy of the IEEE to own the copyright to the technical contributions it publishes. To comply with the IEEE copyright policy, authors are required to sign an IEEE Copyright
Form before publication in either the print or electronic medium. This form retains to authors and their employers full rights to reuse their material for their own purposes. Authors are
requested to submit a signed copy of the Copyright Form with their final manuscript. The form can be downloaded from www.ieee.org/copyright.
